Concerts: Joao Bosco Kenny Garrett Quintet (13/07/2018)

Kenny Garrett and Joao Bosco, two greats of Jazz and Popular Brasileira Music, respectively, in one of the most anticipated nights of the San Javier Jazz Festival

Jazz San Javier's usual date with Brazilian music comes in this edition with the singer, guitarist and composer Joao Bosco, one of the most outstanding musicians of the contemporary Brazilian song that had not yet visited San Javier.

Elis Regina was the first to record her songs when engineer Joao Bosco moved to Rio de Janeiro, determined to dedicate himself to music influenced by the American jazz sound of Miles Davis, and the roots of bossa nova with Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, whom he met at the university, and who would end up being one of the greatest influences on the celebrated lyrics of Joao Bosco.

Like the rest of his generation, he lived with the military dictatorship of Brazil, a period in which songs such as "O Bebaido ea Equilibrista" (1977) that would end up being an anthem for Amnesty International.

His collaborations with jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour made him known in the United States in 1988, starting an international projection that, among other venues around the world, has led him several times to the Montreux Jazz Festival.

His personal style, rooted in the tradition of samba and bossa nova combined with jazz and other ethnic sounds, will sound, for the first time in Jazz San Javier, accompanied by an extraordinary band that includes the prestigious guitarist Ricardo Silveira.

The second concert of the night will be starred by the American jazz saxophonist Kenny Garrett, who with a brilliant career of more than 30 years, is widely considered the most important alto saxophonist of his generation.

Readers of the prestigious magazine DownBeat considered him for eight years the best Saxo Alto in Jazz, and The New York Times has compared him to the great Charlie Parker.

His beginnings as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and later of the band Miles Davis, with whom he worked for five years, forged the legend of this Grammy-winning Detroit musician who has played with the great stars of Jazz, and developed an individual career in which he also stands out as a composer.

During his career, Garrett has performed and recorded with musicians such as Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Bard Mehldau, Freddie Hubbard, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, among many others.

The personal, unique and eclectic style of Kenny Garret, named Doctor Honoris Causa by the Berklee College of Music, will sound for the first time at Jazz San Javier where he will perform in Quinteto with Vernell Brown (piano), Corcoran Holt (double bass) and Rudy Bird (percussion), three of the musicians with whom he recorded his last album, brimming with dance rhythms, "Do your Dance" (2016) and Samuel Laviso (drums).
