The largest Bethlehem in Europe unfolds one more year in the Plaza de España in San Javier (21/12/2018)

The "Belen de España", the largest open-air belenistic ensemble in Europe with an area of 520 square meters and 1,200 handcrafted pieces, culminates this year its scenographic transformation as well as the restoration of each of the figures that has been taken held in the workshop of the Griñán family, coinciding with its 51st anniversary.

The Bethlehem that opens this afternoon and will be visited by thousands of people throughout Christmas, in the Plaza de España in San Javier, recovers some of its most typical scenes such as the famous race of greyhounds behind the hares.

The set also incorporates new sculptural groups such as that of the Adoring Kings of Jesus Griñán and a lavish procession to Egypt in which you can see elephants, zebras, tigers along with merchants from the East, the work of Manuel Nicolás Almansa.

The Bethlehem of Spain is characterized by its realism, costumbristas scenes and its murcianía since its pieces, like small sculptures, have come from the work of the most prestigious craftsmen from Murcia of the second half of the twentieth century, heirs of the Salzillesque tradition.

The "Bethlehem of Spain" has a long tradition in San Javier since 51 years ago it was placed for the first time in the same square, in front of the Town Hall, in 1967, driven by Alfonso Meca and a group of amateur neighbors and nativity scene lovers.

Taking advantage of the anniversary, the City Council will publish the book "Belén de España.

50 Years "written by Murcia historian Isabel Durante, which will be presented on January 4, 2019 at 20:00 in the Plaza de España, in San Javier, in front of the Nativity scene.
