The PSOE welcomes that the Assembly approves its motion to create an economic revitalization plan to compensate for the closure of the San Javier airport (10/10/2019)

The deputy of the Socialist Parliamentary Group denounces that the regional government did not conduct any study of negative impact on the economy of the area of immediate influence of the San Javier airport, and recalls that these municipalities devote much of their economic activity to tourism

The socialist regional deputy Carmina Fernández has celebrated that the Economy and Finance Commission of the Regional Assembly has approved the motion of the Socialist Parliamentary Group in which it asks the regional government to draw up an economic revitalization plan to compensate for the closure of the airport of San Javier in the municipalities around the Mar Menor.

Carmina Fernández has indicated that the opening of the Corvera airport and the cessation of the functions performed by the San Javier airport poses problems that should have been foreseen due to the impact that, in its area of immediate economic influence, has such an infrastructure.

He recalled that the regional government did not conduct any study of negative impact on the economy of the area of immediate influence of the San Javier airport, such as the municipalities of Mar Menor, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares, fundamentally.

"These municipalities devote much of their economic activity to tourism and, it is clear that the closure of an airport, of such an important infrastructure, which is in its territory, is beyond doubt that it will have a very negative influence on the area in many fields of activity, "he explained.

"Many companies have closed, others have seen their turnover reduced by more than 40 percent since opening Corvera airport," he added.

The Socialist deputy has also noted that the staff of the companies, which previously had a municipality (San Javier or Los Alcázares) less than four kilometers, used six minutes to travel to spend a night in one of the hotels or spend a few hours in The area, a tourist area.

"They don't do this anymore, since there are 35 kilometers from Corvera to San Javier and the city of Murcia is closer, 25 kilometers away, and therefore they take less time to go there, and they also have better communication," he argued. .

Finally, Carmina Fernández has indicated that at the moment, with the situation in which these municipalities are after the passage of DANA, with a diminished economic activity, it is much more important that this economic revitalization plan be put in place.
