The Mayor of San Javier supports the confinement of the municipality (13/03/2020)

The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo today endorsed the decision previously announced by the president of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras regarding the confinement of the municipality of San Javier with the rest of the coastal municipalities of the Region to try to contain the spread of COVID-19, due to the significant arrival of citizens from other communities that is taking place these days.

"These are extraordinary measures for extraordinary moments", José Miguel Luengo pointed out, who recalled the special situation of the municipality of San Javier "with a very high number of second residences that are now being occupied, largely by tourists from Madrid."

Luengo added that "pedagogy was probably lacking at first and they were not sufficiently warned of the danger of contagion that the displacement of a transmission area such as Madrid may entail" so in the current situation he claimed "forcefulness" when limiting the movement of people.

Luengo added that it would be a measure that would strengthen the confinement to which the municipality will be subjected in the next 14 days, for which he was favorable to the declaration of a state of alarm by the Government of the Nation.

The mayor of San Javier again appealed to individual responsibility when it comes to avoiding infections and recalled that both residents and all those visitors who come to the municipality must take into account the conditions of confinement that will prevent them from leaving their homes if it is not for a reason work, care, or purchase of food or medicine, keeping the rest of establishments and leisure venues closed, such as terraces, bars and restaurants.

The City of San Javier, which has already suspended all scheduled activity and keeps the municipal facilities closed, has sealed the playgrounds this morning.

"We must remember that it is not a vacation but an extreme measure that, although uncomfortable, we must continue in an exercise of civic responsibility to contain the contagions."

That is the message that since last night the municipal services of the Local Police and Emergencies have been broadcast by public address system, in tourist areas such as Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga del Mar Menor, warning of the situation especially to citizens arriving from transmission areas such as Madrid and Basque Country.
