The Department of Health and Education take the International Day of Childhood Cancer to the institutes (15/02/2018)

The councils of Health and Education today commemorated the International Day of Childhood Cancer in the institutes of the municipality with "positive information so that young people know solidarity initiatives and are aware of the importance of research," as explained today Councilor Catherine Perez , responsible for both councils, in the IES "Ruiz de Alda".

The activity has counted on the collaboration of the Association Against Cancer, of San Javier, which has installed an information table in which the students have been able to know the operation, the services and the objectives that move the association.

Sergio Cepeda, student of Sports Science, has also participated, driving an initiative that combines sports and solidarity with cancer research as a charitable goal.

The young Sergio Cepeda, a native of Tomelloso who studies the Degree in Sports Science at the UMU campus in San Javier, gave a talk to students of 4th of ESO about his experience as promoter of a charitable initiative and invited the young people to launch any activity with which to contribute either to fight against cancer and other causes.

Sergio Cepeda, who already made the route from Santiago de la Ribera to Santiago de Compostela by bicycle with which he raised 2000 euros, told the students his next challenge will be to cover the distance between Paris and Valencia where he will deliver all the proceeds to the Institute of Health Research La Fe, dedicated to research on childhood cancer.

The chosen system for the collection of donations will be through a crowdfunding account, in migranodearena.org where each contribution goes directly to the beneficiary institution, without intermediaries.

Cepeda transferred to young people the importance that sport can have in the field of solidarity or as an exercise to overcome with examples like the one of Iván González, sick of leukemia who decided to train to undertake challenges "1000 km against leukemia", from Avilés to Marbella, which took the opportunity to raise funds for the Josep Carreras Foundation.

Sergio Cepeda recalled how on his arrival in Marbella he was embraced by the father of the young Pablo Raéz, who ended up dying after a long battle against the disease that he had in social networks encouraging the donation of marrow getting a significant increase in donations that in his city it was 1,300 percent.

In his talk, Sergio Cepeda emphasized the importance of research that draws heavily on social donations for specific projects such as a vaccine in childhood cancer, and took the opportunity to remember how decisive it is to adopt a lifestyle healthy, both in food and physical exercise, both for cancer and for any other disease.

The activity, aimed at Secondary students, is also carried out at the IES "Mar Menor" and in the next few days it is planned to take it to the "Sacred Heart".
