The municipality of San Javier recycled 360 tons of glass in 2017, 9 percent more than the previous year, which means a total of 27 kilos per inhabitant per year, standing well above the regional and national average that is around 17 kilos per inhabitant, as reported today by the Ecovidrio area manager, Roberto Fuentes during the presentation of the summer campaign "Take note, recycle glass" in which the general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo and the councilor participated of Environment of San Javier, Antonio Martínez.
The campaign, promoted by Ecovidrio with the support of the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Business and Environment, is carried out in San Javier, and the rest of the coastal municipalities such as San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares, Cartagena, Águilas and Mazarrón for the fourth year. consecutive and is aimed especially at the hospitality sector that produces 30 percent of the glass that is generated in the summer season, explained Roberto Fuentes.
In San Javier, a total of 170 hotel establishments in Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga del Mar Menor have been added, 65 more than last summer.
The development of the campaign will involve the installation of 41 new containers specially adapted to the hospitality sector and special cubes will be delivered to facilitate the recycling of bars and restaurants.
Likewise, informative visits will be made to the adhered establishments that will be encouraged to take an active part in the recycling with rewarding the most committed with a master class taught by the chef with three Michelin stars, Quique Dacosta.
The Councilor for the Environment of San Javier, Antonio Martínez highlighted the participation of local establishments that continue to grow each summer as well as the effort of Ecovidrio and the Ministry to reach the tourism sector increasingly involved in environmental matters.
Martínez highlighted the good figures that San Javier shows in the recycling of glass, doubling almost the regional average, and encouraged the neighbors to continue in that line.
"Reaching one hundred percent of glass recycling" should be the goal, said the general director of Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo for which "we must spare no effort when it comes to citizen awareness in this area."
Luengo highlighted "a change in trend" in the progressive increase of glass recycling figures in the Region of Murcia were about 25 million kilos, with an average of one container per 207 inhabitants.
Luengo recalled the importance for the environment of a small gesture such as separating waste.
