Villegas remembers that the nicotine and the tar of a cigarette end contaminate 50 liters of water and it takes 10 years to degrade
The initiative 'Regional Network of Beaches without Smoke', launched by the Ministry of Health, "has also, along with the health aspects, an important environmental value", claimed the counselor, Manuel Villegas, today in San Javier during the presentation of the program in this municipality, which adds three beaches to the initiative.
Villegas explained that nicotine and tar from a cigarette end contaminate 50 liters of water and that the cigarette end takes 10 years to degrade.
"We are also facing the biggest plastic pollutant of the sea," said the counselor, who said that "the cigarette nozzles are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic component that is not biodegradable, so these microparticles end up in the sea, the fish ingest them and enter the trophic chain ".
Manuel Villegas insisted on the "irreversible damage" that tobacco causes to our health and the environment, for which he appealed "to the awareness of bathers and holidaymakers."
Three beaches in San Javier
The municipality of San Javier has joined the initiative of the regional government with the El Pescador beaches (in all its extension) and the accessible spaces of El Castillico (Santiago de la Ribera) and El Mistral (La Manga).
The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, and the Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, visited the beach of El Pescador today to present the campaign that takes place under the theme 'It is normal to not smoke' to raise awareness, promote health and Protect the environment.
The counselor reiterated that "the important thing is to get used to the normal thing is not to smoke and that message has to reach the youth".
All the coastal municipalities participate with some of their beaches in this project that the Ministry of Health has launched this summer and that is integrated into the anti-smoking strategy to achieve a region free of smoke in 2025.
In the website of Murciasalud and in the QR codes that appear on the identification fences installed in the beach areas and in the more than 20,000 brochures distributed by the Ministry, the beaches that will be part of this initiative are informed.
Also, in this portal 'Beaches without smoke' you can access a questionnaire of satisfaction, assessments and suggestions.
