The universities of the Region of Murcia will measure their strength in the XX edition of the Inter-Universities Regatta that will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 10 am at Barnuevo Beach, Santiago de la Ribera, organized by the Club de Canoeing Mar Menor and the City of San Javier.
The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo accompanied by the dean of the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the UMU, Jesús García and the representatives of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Sergio Amat;
of the San Antonio Catholic University, Pablo Rosique and the General Air Academy, Jesús María Bernal, today presented the regatta whose trophy is only given after three consecutive victories or five alternate victories.
In the 20-year history of the Regatta, which was born to promote the Mar Menor as a race course, only the UCAM has taken home the trophy four times after winning in 14 of the 20 editions of the Championship.
The UMU and the UPCT won two editions each and the AGA one edition, the first held in 2000.
The regatta, which is held in four categories: male, female, mixed and master that includes faculty and staff of each university, will start at 10am when the first of the exits will take place along a parallel route to the coastline that can be see from the beach.
The medal ceremony will take place at 13. The trophy will be guarded for at least three years since in the last edition it was handed over to the UCAM.
As a novelty this year, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary will be held a flag raising in the prolegómenos of the regatta, at 09:30 am on the Paseo Colon where flags of the four participating universities will wave, in addition to the local, regional and national.
The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo highlighted the consolidation of the Championship "an essential appointment of the beginning of summer in Santiago de la Ribera", which serves "from the values ​​of sport to promote the Mar Menor, our universities, and our municipality" .
The representatives of the participating universities coincided in pointing out the opportunity that this race represents for the meeting of the four higher education centers of the Region in a day of coexistence and sportsmanship.
