The City Council of San Javier has joined the declaration of Mayors and Mayors of Cologne in which the commitment of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is assumed and its 54 articles that recognize persons under 18 as subjects of law, without discrimination, ensuring their best interests and with full right to express their opinions.
The adhesion of the City Council of San Javier to this last international pronouncement in the defense of the rights of minors, proposed to the Plenary by the Councilor for Social Rights, Estíbaliz Masegosa and backed by all municipal political groups, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Children's rights convention.
"It is a good reason to renew our commitment to children," said Masegosa, who recalled that San Javier has been recognized by UNICEF as a Child Friendly City since 2016. The Cologne Declaration arises precisely from the International Summit of Child Friendly Cities convened by UNICEF and the German city, last October on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Cologne Summit, whose conclusions San Javier assumes, recognizes the importance of developing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the defense of the interests of children and adolescents, and commits the signatories to guarantee in each community the application of the Children's rights convention.
It also undertakes to implement the content of the Child Friendly Cities initiative that, among other things, gives voice to children and adolescents whose needs must take into account the laws, policies, budgets and public decisions that affect them, in addition to guarantee their basic needs and promote the enjoyment of family life, play and leisure for minors, among other aspects.
