Justo Botella considers that the loss of salinity is the cause of the situation of the Mar Menor reason why it proposes a floodgate that reduces the transfer of water between the two seas
The mayor José Miguel Luengo met this morning with the engineer of Camino de San Javier, Justo Botella who defends that the current problem the Mar Menor is a problem of salinity decrease for which solution proposes the construction of a dam in El Estacio.
During the meeting that was held at the request of the mayor "to know firsthand the project proposed by this neighbor of San Javier," Justo Botella explained that the floodgate would help to regenerate the salinity proper of the Mar Menor that has declined progressively since 1973.
For Botella, the current passage of water exchange in the Canal del Estacio between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea is very high, going from about 75 cubic meters per second since 1973 when it opened, compared to the cubic meter that existed previously.
In his project, the road engineer Justo Botella proposes the installation of a flap damper at the bottom of the Estacio canal that recreates the flow of water exchange between the two seas as it was before the 1973 dredging. The dam would be closed and Would only open with the opening of the drawbridge for the passage of boats with the aim of not interfering with the current navigability.
Justo Botella, which estimates this action in less than one million euros, has sent its project to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia with the intention of being considered for modification Or expansion of the Integrated Management Plan for the Protected Spaces of Mar Menor, and has succeeded in having the Scientific Committee of the Mar Menor study and evaluate its proposal.
The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo considered "very interesting both the previous study carried out on the evolution of the Mar Menor and the solution proposed by this project" and showed his satisfaction "because it is taken into account and evaluated by a committee of experts."
Luengo thanked Justo Botella "expert in the matter and neighbor of San Javier, his study and his involvement in the problems of the Mar Menor."
