The Time Bank Patchwork workshop, coordinated by volunteer Chus González, has launched the solidarity project "The Heart Pillow", through which volunteers sew heart-shaped pillows that aim to help in recovery After surgery for breast cancer.
The pillow, "which is neither bought nor sold," is given to breast cancer patients through the health centers of San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera that already have them available.
The pillow is heart-shaped and with a V steeper than usual so that it fits perfectly under the patient's arm and does not move.
This simple gesture can help the arm not to touch the wound, and not swell because of the lymph glands.
The pillow supports the arm and the muscles of the shoulder and allows to sleep at night until on the side operated.
Avoid keeping your arm high above your head and before a coughing attack, grasping it tightly diminishes the pain, not forgetting that emotionally, giving the Heart Pillow helps strengthen patients' self-esteem and to let them know that they do not they are alone.
The story of the Heart Pillow began in the United States with a doctor who after surgery for a cancer of the mother received a heart-shaped pillow made by her aunts.
The doctor found that the fabric heart allowed him to decrease the pressure of the arm on the armpit and to relieve the discomfort by speeding up the healing process.
Later in a Medical Congress on Oncology the doctor shared her experience with a nurse from Denmark, who did not hesitate to adopt the idea and take the Heart Pillow Project to her country, implanting herself in hospitals in her country and other European countries.
In Spain, she was a neighbor of Mallorca, a hobbyist, Mariá Jose Loly de Cooman, MICKY, who discovered the project looking for ideas to develop her hobby and without hesitation contacted the Danish nurse to start the project in Spain.
