The Chief of the General Staff of the Air, General Javier Salto Martínez-Avial presided today the solemn act of opening the academic year 2017-2018 at the General Air Academy in which students will attend a total of 530 students, of which 107 are new entry, which will follow simultaneously military and university studies in the University Center of Defense, attached to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, UPCT.
Together with the Chief of the Air Force, other military authorities such as the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Pedro Abad Guerrero, General of Division Pablo Castilla, AGA Director Miguel Iborra Ruiz, academic authorities such as the director of the University Center for Defense, Nicolás Madrid, the Rector of the UPCT Alejando Diaz Morcillo, along with the government delegate in Murcia, Antonio Sánchez-Solís and the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, as civil authorities .
General Javier Salto Martínez-Avial highlighted in his speech "honor and satisfaction" that led him to preside for the first time as Chief of the Air Staff, the beginning of the course at the AGA coinciding with the 75th anniversary of its creation.
The Chief of Staff of the Air Force highlighted the important role that the Air Force currently has in the Armed Forces and pointed to the formation as a basic pillar of the Spanish air force that it described as "5th generation" in an Army of the Air he claimed as "modern, committed and at the highest level in NATO and the Allied Air Forces."
The director of the AGA, Miguel Iborra Ruiz noted the consolidation of the new system of education of the Army after seven years of operation of the University Center for Defense "with a high academic performance rate that exceeds 95 percent."
The head of the AGA asked for "constancy" to the students and "responsibility and commitment" to the teachers in an act "of academic tradition, of pride and joy in this new horizon" that he asked to approach with "optimism".
The opening of the course began with the entrance to the hall of the Social Club of the AGA of the authorities who presided over the event attended by the Minister of Presidency and Transparency Noelia Arroyo, and the mayors of Murcia, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torre Pacheco, among other authorities, as well as CUD faculty and students who closed the ceremony by singing the traditional "Gaudeamus Igitur" and the Hymn of the Air Force, after the interventions of the authorities.
The University Defense Center of the General Air Academy has 108 civil and military professors who simultaneously teach military training and the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Organization, which allows students to finish their five year studies with the obtaining of the university degree and of the office of officer of the Army of the Air like Lieutenants.
