The mayor announced this measure in a meeting on water optimization in the municipality in which a "swamp shader" was presented that could avoid the loss of the equivalent of a relief irrigation in the region, preventing the evaporation of water.
The City of San Javier will subsidize municipal taxes for the construction of rainwater harvesting infrastructures to the farmers of the municipality as announced today by the mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo at the end of a meeting held at the City Hall in which he addressed the optimization of water resources.
The meeting was attended by the General Director of Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo and representatives of the General Directorate of Water and the Development Institute, as well as Ángel García, manager of the Soltir cooperative, which has more than 200 farmers, most of whom are municipality of San Javier and Manuel Ruiz, manager of Paléc Ecológico, a local company invited to present its own system that avoids the evaporation of dammed water.
It is a "swamp shader" a system capable of preserving the equivalent of a relief irrigation avoiding the evaporation of dammed water, explained Manuel Ruiz, head of the company that is dedicated to serving the agricultural sector and designed a solution to the problems posed by Soltir to avoid the loss of water in its marshes.
Manuel Ruiz explained that it is a floating piece system, 80x80cm, which are assembled by clips, providing a shade that eradicates the proliferation of algae and their consequent elimination with chemical products, thus preventing them from reaching the Mar Menor.
The pieces, whose cost will be 4 euros per unit, are recyclables with an average life of 10 years, as explained by the promoter.
The calculation of water savings that this system would produce is 12 percent of the 840,000 cubic hectometers that can store the 17,000 existing marshes in the Region of Murcia "which is equivalent to more than one relief irrigation," said Manuel Ruiz.
The mayor of San Javier José Miguel Luengo stressed the importance of any initiative, public or private, that improves the use of water and recalled the project promoted by the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Environment, Francisco Jódar, a water lamination system from the Sierra Escalona "whose functions would be to reduce the virulence with which this water reaches the Mar Menor, recover water by means of dams in the channels, and reduce the contribution of sediments to the lagoon".
Luengo announced that the municipal government is determined to support the initiatives of farmers who invest in the collection of water for what will be launched a bonus on the building tax that could reach one hundred percent.
Ángel García, manager of Soltir, highlighted the efforts of the farmers to take advantage of the rainwater which motivated them to go to Paléc Ecológico in search of a new tool, more affordable, ecological and practical to avoid the loss of water by evaporation in its reservoirs.
García pointed out that this type of investment has environmental treatment because it improves the use of water and the irrigation system, so they can benefit from aid that is already operational in the Autonomous Community for that purpose.
