The Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Tomás, attended today the intergenerational day between users of the social center of older people of SanJavier and young people of IES Mar Menor.
The Ministry will allocate this year about 800,000 euros to serve the elderly in the municipality, which has 146 places accredited by the Murcia Institute of Social Action (IMAS).
Tomás said that "the objective of these actions is to improve the quality of life of the elderly, proposing active aging programs, with special attention to vulnerable people, and always based on values ​​such as dignity, humanism and solidarity."
The program that the IMAS offers in senior centers includes workshops to promote health and wellbeing, personal development and life cycle and training projects, social participation and volunteering.
Eliminate stereotypes
The owner of Family stressed that "we are developing the program of intergenerational communication with young people in the 17 social centers of older people of IMAS, as a way to promote active aging, since the exchange of experiences between young and old is very enriching for both of them".
According to Tomás Violante, "we want to make the elderly aware of the importance of their contribution to society".
In this sense, he referred to "the good results" obtained in the pilot project of Murcia II, which "encouraged us to start it up in the rest of the centers for the elderly, because we have much to learn from them and the elderly have a lot to do. teach us. "
This interaction is a model of educational action that promotes the role of older people and their active participation, promotes equality based on generational communication, without age discrimination, and by which knowledge, habits, skills and abilities are acquired. allow to obtain a significant experience for personal development.
The activities that are being carried out in this line are of community social interaction, such as coffee-talks, debates, film-forums, round tables, workshops and monographic meetings.
Among the advantages that are achieved with its implementation are eliminating stereotypes, prejudices and erroneous or negative images among university students and the elderly.
As well as promoting the social participation of the elderly and their awareness of belonging to the social environment where they live, especially through the exchange between generations through which they transmit life experiences and build common goals.
