ANSE studies the migration of birds from Isla Grossa (03/04/2009)

Since last March 16 and until the 15th of May, a team of bird banders Naturalists Association of Southeast working permanently in Isla Grossa (metric tons of San Javier), compared to La Manga del Mar Menor studying the migratory path of birds prenuptial, from African soil, fly toward the central and northern Europe.

The results will be included in the "project Piccole Isole" ringing in small Mediterranean islands, involving many different banding stations bordering countries, and aims to study the migration of European passerines.

The work performed by Grosa Island banders and others, mainly ANSE, completely voluntary, and has the approval of the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity in the Region of Murcia, which provides facilities and transport to the island.

During the first campaign, which took place in April 2007, were caught and immediately released a total of 1876 bird banding led to 1608 and 168 controls (and ringed bird catches) for 45 species from 17 different families.

Most birds were trans-banding (over 70%) highlighting Warbler (723), Robin (231), Redstart (120), Common Swallow (86), Common Nightingale (74), Subalpine Warbler (47 ) or Bonelli 's Warbler (32).

You caught other species, such as Grey Nightjar, Escribano Hortelano or Tree Pipit.

Grosa Island has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

ANSE developed between 2004 and 2007 together with the Autonomous Community Life Project (funded by the European Union) for the conservation and study of the Audouin's gull on the island.

The Partnership has led on several occasions with both the Autonomous Community (the body responsible for nature conservation in the region, and Grossa Island) and the Ministry of Environment (owner of the Island) to be reached an agreement to work together in the medium and long term of both administrations in this unique natural area.

Unfortunately, the Autonomous still approve the Management Plan SPA Grosa Island, despite being one of the commitments made in the Life project funded by the European Union.

During the first week of the campaign ANSE banding in 2009 have been captured and released, a total of 271 birds of 14 different species, corresponding to 169 and 102 banding recaptures.

For now, the most abundant species is the Robin, a pre-Saharan migrants, with 76 birds banded and control of a bird is not ringed on the island.

You have made 91 catches Sardinian warbler, most of them birds controls and banded in previous campaigns (most notably a female born seven years ago), which gives us new data to better understand the biology of this species, the only player passerine on the island.
